White Elephant Rules: How to Play (+ 8 Variations)白象交换礼物规则 + 8 种变体
A white elephant gift exchange (also called a Yankee swap or Dirty Santa) is the most chaotic, most loved game at American holiday parties. Everyone brings one wrapped gift, and players take turns either opening a new gift or stealing one that's already been opened.

What you need准备什么
- One wrapped gift per player, all around the same price (a $20–$30 limit is common).每人一份包好的礼物,价格差不多
- A random turn order — draw numbers from a hat or use our generator.
- A place to pile the unopened gifts where everyone can see them.
The basic rules基本规则
- Draw numbers. Everyone gets a turn number. Player 1 goes first.
- Player 1 opens a gift from the pile and shows it to everyone.
- Each next player chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal any gift that has already been opened.
- If your gift is stolen, you immediately choose again: open a new gift or steal a different one. You can't steal back the gift that was just taken from you.
- A gift is "frozen" after it has been stolen three times — it stays with its third owner for good.
- The game ends when the last gift has been opened.
House rules to agree on first开始前先约定的规则
- Steal limit: 3 steals per gift is standard. Use 2 for a faster game.
- No immediate steal-backs: you can't take back a gift on the same turn it was stolen from you.
- Steals per turn: some groups allow only one steal per turn to keep the game moving.
- Final swap: Player 1 never got to steal, so many groups let them make one last swap at the end.

Yankee swap ending
After the last gift is opened, Player 1 may swap with anyone. It makes going first worth it.
Dice white elephant
Everyone takes a gift up front. Players roll a die: 1 = swap with your left, 2 = swap right, 3 = steal anyone's, 4 = open yours, 5 = pass, 6 = roll again. Stop when the timer runs out.
Left-right story
Everyone holds a gift while the host reads a story full of the words "left" and "right." Pass gifts in that direction every time you hear them.
Themed exchange
Pick a theme — "things that cost $10," "something you'd buy for yourself," "best snack." It makes shopping easier and the gifts funnier.
Re-gift edition
Every gift must be something already in your home. Hilarious, and free.
Steal-only round
After all gifts are opened, run a 2-minute timer where anyone may steal from anyone.
Wrapped-twice
Wrap gifts in misleading boxes so nobody can guess what's inside from the shape.
Office-friendly
Set a $15–$25 limit, ban gag gifts that could embarrass anyone, and cap steals at 2 to keep it under 30 minutes.
Good gifts under $2525 美元以内的好礼物
The gifts that get stolen most are useful and a little fun: a cozy blanket, a nice candle, a fancy hot sauce set, a portable phone charger, a coffee sampler, a card game, or a lottery-ticket "bouquet." Gag gifts are funny once — the best ones are still something people secretly want.
